As required by the Mellieħa Athletic Club Statute, an Annual General Meeting (AGM) is to be held on an annual basis.

Once again, the meeting was attended by an encouraging number of members, who this time swapped their blue vests to casual clothes.

After a number of years in service for the club, Julian Borg confirmed that he is stepping down from the committee due to his personal commitments.  All members and committee thanked Julian for his excellent service through the years.

The outgoing president Julian Borg gave his final speech, while secretary Tony Vella provided an annual report when in summary, he highlighted the following main points:

  • Main events organised during the season (namely Club races, social events and a number of training camps which were held both locally and in Holland at Papendhal Sports Centre (through our Head Coach));
  • MAAA Road running league performance – with our club placing 2nd overall;
  • The outstanding performance of some of our athletes, with particular reference to Andrew Grech;
  • Launch of new Website and Online membership registration system;
  • Consolidation of our Nursery section;
  • The new role within the committee of Vice-President is being proposed to this AGM.

Treasurer Stephanie Borg presented the Financial Report for the 2013/2014 season. She commented on the club’s annual accounts where both the Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet were provided to the present members.

In order to structure and distribute better the increasing responsibilities of the club, it was proposed to introduce a new role of Vice-President within the committee.  Such change necessitates an update in the club’s statute which was approved by members. The committee will now be composed of The President, The Vice President, The Secretary, The Treasurer and five other committee members whose roles will be defined and agreed upon for the next term.

Ivan Cassar and Tony Vella were confirmed as President and Vice-President respectively.

MAAA President Edwin Camilleri was present for this year’s AGM, and in his short speech acknowledged Mellieħa AC’s contribution to the local athletics and running scene through its nursery with the younger athletes and also with the more adult runners.  Also, he augured Andrew Grech to improve even further after two successful performances on the international scene in one of which he broke the national record on the Half Marathon distance.

Another new season is now to be looked forward upon with all the hurdles and challenges that it will present.  The unity of Mellieħa AC should however always prevail.
