The presence of our athletes was once again high in another locally held race – the Nestle Fitness 24th Malta Challenge Marathon which span on the whole past weekend of the 28, 29 and 30 November.

A number of our athletes opted to run the whole marathon distance over the three days, while others opted to team up and form relay teams.  Relay teams were an innovation to this race, and gave an opportunity for the team spirit within our club to shine through as our club presented 10 from the 19 formed teams.

Team Challenge Relay

Up till Saturday, our men’s team “Mellieha Knights, formed by Alan Camilleri, Ivan Cassar and Andrew Grech was trailing the then first placed team by 4 minutes 24 seconds, and it looked like the latter needed a Herculean effort to make up for this deficit.

But on Sunday morning, at St Paul’s Bay by the Wignacourt tower with 25 kilometres ahead of him, Andrew Grech left as a knight but by the finishing line in Valletta he must have surely felt a grandmaster, covering the whole distance in 01:26:25, an incredible 8:28 ahead of the second placed relay athlete, winning it all for our “Mellieha Knights” with minutes to spare.

One of our Ladies team, “Sporty Charmers Cubed” made up of Alexia Cutajar, Joëlle Agius and Charmaine Mifsud also placed third, to confirm another great morning for our club.

Challenge Marathon

A number of other athletes who opted to run the full challenge were awarded with the 2nd and 5th team placing for MAC.  “MAC Team A” who placed second composed of David Galea, Tonio Farrugia, Mario Agius and Charles Camilleri.  While “MAC Team B” who placed 5th composed of Edmund Mifsud, Hubert Barbara, Josef Pulo Zammit and George Spiteri.  The latter is one of the few athletes who has participated in all of the 24 Challenges Marathon editions which have been organised to date!

Other awards were delivered to Tonio Farrugia and Josef Pulo Zammit who won their age category.

Well done to all participants!
