The 2014-15 MAAA Road Running League started on Saturday, 18 October with a 5km race at Siġġiewi.

Our club once again fielded a very strong field – 46 males and 5 ladies, making up more than one-third of the 140 athletes at the starting line.

139 athletes continuously followed our own Andrew Grech’s footprints who totally dominated the race, with a timing of 15:52, beating his own personal time of last year by 13 seconds and last year’s winning time by 4 seconds.

The newly joined Angele Sammut and Joanne Camilleri alongside the long-serving Marthese Mercieca made up the Female’s Team which placed as the first female team. Angele Sammut and Marthese Mercieca both managed to go under 20 minutes. Only 6 females managed the feat.

Andrew Grech, Chris Mizzi, Charlot Bartolo and Paul Formosa made the males team that finished third.

Apart from Andrew Grech’s superlative performance, two of Mellieħa AC athletes finished under 18 minutes, 8 finished under 19 minutes, and a further 4 under 20 minutes. At last year’s race, only 9 Mellieħa AC athletes managed to get under 20 minutes.

While the hot shining sun during the race might not have been too welcomed, it surely made for another bright day for our club.
