Angela Sammut, from the same club, came in third, and
with Carmen Hili finishing fifth, the Saints won another ten points to take their total to a formidable 20, leaving the
others adrift in the team event.

However, the tussle for the lesser women team prizes is still wide open, with Pembroke so far on 55 points.

Mellieha and Zurrieq Wolves, amassing 61 and 65 points respectively, may, however, yet turn the tables, with another
three legs still to go, the first of which falls on January 9, with the popular Qawra event. The race is scheduled to
start at 8 a.m.

Closing the Leadership Gender Gap in European Athletics

Dear Friends in Sport.

The attached self-explanatory news item is intended to promote athletics, especially to boost the participation of the under-represented females in our sport, more so those involved in leadership roles, or would-be leadership roles.

The news item is to appear on the Athletics Malta web-site this week-end.

As you can see from the content, Athletics Malta is an important partner in a European-wide project (as per title) and therefore we should all do our part, or better still, our utmost, so that this work will be a success. Participants who complete the three-part survey will be eligible for incentive prizes, including two expenses paid trips for two people each to the 2011 European Indoor Championships in Paris.

The survey is open to anyone interested in athletics with access to the Internet. The link to the survey can be found on the website of the Malta Amateur Athletic Association at http://www.athleticsmalta.org Terms and conditions apply.

The survey is part of an overall project funded by the European Union and led by the Netherlands athletics federation (Atletiekunie).

“Gender is an important issue for the future of athletics and through this project we are trying to chart the best way forward based on what the people in the sport think.” said Project Ambassador Sylvia Barlag, Vice-President of Atletiekunie and a Member on the European Athletics Council. “I want to encourage everyone, athletes, coaches, volunteers and fans of all ages to take part in this survey and help us to strengthen the sport,” emphasised Ms Barlag.

The project is among the first to be supported under the European Union’s new budget for preparatory actions in the field of sport (vide http://ec.europa.eu/sport/index en.html )

European Athletics and a total of 12 national federations from around the continent are partners in two other projects funded by the new budget: ‘Athle´ Sante´ Loisir’ led by the French athletics federation, and ‘Athletes2Business’ led by the European Olympics Committee.

About the project.
Gender is an important issue for the future of athletics. To continue to grow and develop the sport needs to attract more participants – athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers, fans, etcetera.

Currently women are underrepresented in the sport’s leadership positions in many countries. The aim of the project ‘Closing the Leadership Gender Gap in European Athletics’ is to find ways to address this situation and promote the development of women leaders at all levels of athletics.

The European Union has awarded a grant of more than €215,000 to a consortium of nine national athletics federations, the Malta Amateur Athletic Association being a full and equal partner, to conduct the survey.

A complete project report will be published on http://www.athleticsmalta.org and circulated through the Maltese media in June 2011.

For further information vide http://www.european-athletics.org/european-unionprojects.html

Anthony Fava
Communications Coordinator
Athletics Malta

25 October 2010
Athletics EU Project- to promote women leaders with help from the European Union

Athletics to promote women leaders with help from the European Union

The European Union has awarded a project grant of more than €215,000 to a consortium composed of
nine national athletics federations, in which the Malta Amateur Athletic Association is a partner, and
two universities, so that, together, the development of women leaders at all levels of athletics will be
promoted. This project is very much in line with the European Community endeavours to close the
gender gap among its citizens, and, in this particular instance, within European Athletics.

In fact, the project is among the first to be supported under the European Union’s new budget for
preparatory actions in the field of sport (vide http://ec.europa.eu/sport/index en.html )

Leading this consortium is Atletiekunie, the Netherlands Athletics Federation and the project,
appropriately titled ‘Closing the Leadership Gender Gap in European Athletics’ will feature a twenty
five country survey, the first part of which to be conducted and concluded as from this month through
to the 7 January 2011. A seminar for future women leaders shall follow immediately thereafter,
during January 2011.

Open to everyone with an interest in athletics, the three-part survey aims to document attitudes and
issues faced by women leaders in the sport of athletics and assist in finding ways to attract and retain
more women coaches, competition officials, club leaders and administrators.

The European-wide official launch of the survey is scheduled for Monday the 18th October, 2010 and
the names of all who complete the three parts of the survey - wherein the second and third parts will
be conducted early in the new year – will be entered for draws as incentive prizes. The main prize
being two all-expenses paid trips for two persons to watch the 2011 European Athletics Indoor
Championships in Paris, in the spring.
“With this project, we have a chance to put athletics in the lead among sports and help make it ‘Your
Sport for Life’ by increasing our understanding of the barriers women face and what might be done to
break them down,” says Sylvia Barlag, an European Athletics Council Member and Vice-President of
Atletiekunie, who has also been nominated as the Project Ambassador by European Athletics.
“I want to encourage everyone, athletes, coaches, volunteers and fans, to take part in this survey and
help us to strengthen the sport,” emphasised Ms Barlag.
Two other projects related to this new European Union initiative, also funded by the new budget, are
‘Athle´ Sante´ Loisir’ led by the French athletics federation, and ‘Athletes2Business’ led by the
European Olympic Committees.

For further information vide http://www.european-athletics.org/european-unionprojects.html

Anthony Chircop
President
Malta Amateur Athletics Association

Anthony Fava
Communications Coordinator
Malta Amateur Athletics Association

Qawra 5km Road Race 17/10/10

A record turn-out of 105 athletes presented themselves for this year's Qawra 5km Road Race. 6 of whom produced a sub 17. 8 of the top 10 places belong to Mellieha AC. Meanwhile Stephen Borg placed 3rd in the over 35 category.

Well done to all patecipants, Coach Has Kesra and to the hard working committe for these well deserved results!
Has Kesra in Malta

Mellieha A.C Club Coach Has Kesra, has again paid a visit to Malta on the 21st February and is staying here throughout the days following the Malta Half/Full Marathon on the 1st March 2009.

New Mellieha A.C Committee 2008/09

A most welcome to Tony Vella and Morgan Brimmer who have joined the new committee of Mellieha A.C for the season 2008/09.
Following an extraordinary meeting held recently, Manfred Borda has been appointed as Secretary of the club, whilst Julian Borg is the new Treasurer.
